With its famous motto Liberty, equality, fraternity, the French Republic offers a favorable context for emotional-sexual diversity, something evident today not only in the highest spheres of its government, but also in its internal and international action in defense of the LGTBI rights, far from the staunch conservative protests generated by the adoption of equal marriage in Gallic lands a few years ago. As for cinema, unforgettable films such as Portrait of a Lady on Fire, 120 Beats Per Minute, Summertime o Théo & Hugo, París 05:59also vibrate in our minds, although the reports from Collectif 50/50 also point out — as the Observatory of Diversity in Audiovisual Media does in Spain—to a mere five percent of LGTBI characters in French cinema. For this reason, it is worth celebrating the quality cinematographic works that do emerge each year to offer the best of French sensibility in an LGTBI key. And our selection this year abounds in these proposals! An excellent opportunity to pay tribute to our much-loved ultra-Pyrenean neighbor, and—of course—to the great house that has welcomed us now for 15 years: the French Institute of Barcelona!
