The FIRE!! opens at the French Institute on Thursday June 5 with the feature film Tesis sobre una domesticación and closes there on Sunday June 15 with the feature film High Tide.

Accessibility

This year we are making a little more progress on the subject of accessibility, with several new features: a button on all pages, located on the right of the screen, which will allow you to change the visual appearance of the website; the fact that almost all films in Spanish (except one documentary) will also have Spanish subtitles. And we now have four films with subtitles for deaf people. In addition, we have an accessibility coordinator, Enrich Lluch, who is also one of our Catalan sign language interpreters. We therefore present below the facilities of this year, mainly for people with hearing difficulties.

● All films in foreign languages come with Spanish subtitles and many also in Catalan.

● On the other hand, practically all films in Spanish also come with Spanish or Catalan subtitles.

Distance between Screen and Seats

The French Institute of Barcelona’s cinema, where most screenings take place, has a stage that allows us to host presentations and other parallel activities. The screen where the films and subtitles are projected is therefore slightly further from the front row compared to other conventional cinemas. This distance is 6,65 meters. Keep this in mind if you have any visual impairments, so you can choose the row that best suits you.

Subtitles

Films are often subtitled in Catalan and Spanish, thanks to two LED screens located below the main screen. The space required for these two additional screens to coexist with the main screen can make the subtitles appear somewhat smaller compared to other subtitles directly embedded in the main screen. This is partly offset by the fact that they’re brighter than embedded subtitles, and because they stand out better against the fixed black background of these additional screens, rather than against the moving image of a movie. But keep this in mind when choosing your row!

● Debate after the screening of the feature film Los amantes astronautas, with the lead actor, Javi Oran, on Saturday 07/06 at 10pm.

● Debate after the screening of the feature film One dances, the Other doesn’t, with the director Emilie Girardin, on Sunday 08/06 at 8pm.

● The French Institute theater and the Barcelona LGBTI Center are accessible to people in wheelchairs.

We recommend easy access to the festival venues by public transport:

Sustainability

The FIRE!! Festival aims to offer the most environmentally friendly service possible and encourage you to continue implementing simple actions in your daily lives for the benefit of our environment.

We have significantly reduced the use of air transport for FIRE!! guests, a mode of transportation that is often the main source of pollution (by far) in film festivals’ carbon footprint calculations. The festival has already set the following goals; we try to:

  • Not use planes, but trains for guests from the rest of Spain or from France.
  • If justifiable, use a maximum of one flight, and always within Europe or an equivalent geographic radius.
  • Give priority to local guests, from Barcelona or Catalonia, and always suggest they travel to Barcelona by train.

We also encourage you to use public transport to attend the festival! It is very easy to get to the French Institute or the LGBTI Centre this way. Check the options in the practical information; you’ll see that the metro, bus, tram, and several bike lanes take you there. The French Institute, by the way, has a bike parking lot.

Whenever you can, use public transportation and the bike lane! Barcelona is a great city for that.

The festival prints flyers and posters with recycled paper and eco-friendly inks. You may have noticed that we no longer print catalogues in recent years. You can find all the information (and more) on this website.

The festival’s promotional banners are ordered from Barcelona City Council, which installs them along a circuit of the city’s streets and avenues, then removes and recycles them. The giant banner hanging on the facade of the French Institute is later recycled by this same institution. We don’t generally install any temporary installations on the site, except for the various roll-ups used year after year.

In your daily life, try to use less paper, reuse it, recycle it, and use metal or glass bottles for water. The less plastic, the better…

The French Institute does not normally have a catering service. To offer our visitors a welcoming place to stay, chat with guests, and have a drink, we have been working for years with the collaboration of Berta Fernández, creator of the Las Fernández restaurant and manager of the La Monroe restaurant at the Filmoteca de Catalunya. Our beloved Berta sets up a pop-up bar and catering service on the terrace of the French Institute during the ten days of the festival. Soft drinks, beers, and wines are served, along with a selection of simple, pre-made meals: sandwiches, empanadas, nuts, olives, etc. Therefore, there is no cooking or handling of prepared foods on-site, other than the basic possibility of heating some items in a microwave.

We are also sponsored by Moritz, which provides us with beer kegs, tables, umbrellas, and chairs. We did not purchase any furniture ourselves.

The bar service is provided with cardboard plates and cups and wooden cutlery, and we also try to use all unsold food. All waste from the terrace is systematically taken to the selective containers.

Separating waste, taking it to the selective containers, and using the city’s Green Points is essential for our environment, and I’m sure you’re already doing it super well. Let’s encourage our friends, family, and colleagues to continue doing better and better!

Outside of screenings in the French Institute’s cinema, the festival does not organize activities that cause noise or light pollution. Background music may be played at low volume on the French Institute’s terrace, and in any case, not outside of established hours. If you think the music is too loud, don’t hesitate to tell us!

Nor are projectors or intense lights installed there, except for some decorative string lights at bar level, and with very low intensity. If you still think we can improve, let us know!

Oh, and movies, of course… When we work on film selection, we only view the titles we request or are sent to us through online screeners: we haven’t received physical copies (DVD, Blu-ray, or USB flash drive) for years now, and we clearly specify in our rules that we don’t accept screeners that aren’t sent online.

As for screening copies, we now almost always receive them via powerful online download systems. Shipping physical copies on hard drives has almost become a thing of the past (perhaps a couple each year), minimizing shipping costs and the potential corresponding carbon footprint, especially if shipped by air.

Like us, you probably regularly use VOD platforms to watch movies and series, which offer significant savings compared to physical copies (Blu-rays, DVDs, etc.). But our carbon footprint in the digital world is growing rapidly, and we need to be mindful of the amount of data we accumulate daily in the cloud. Therefore, we should delete documents we no longer use, especially photos and videos that take up a lot of space. Or clean up our emails regularly, try to limit our use of GIFs, and also be mindful of everything we post on social media!
