Since Mostra FIRE!! programmed Plan B in 2010, Marco Berger has not only become our favourite director with his successive films (Ausente, Mariposa, Hawaii, Taekwondo, El cazador, Un rubio, or Los agitadores), but the festival has also presented Argentina’s excellent LGBTQ+ cinema production year after year. In particular, we’ve seen powerful films directed by women, from Lucrecia Martel’s La Ciénaga to Cecilia del Valle’s Canela, as well as Liliana Paolinelli’s Lengua materna and Margen de error, Inés María Barrionuevo’s Atlántida, and Clarissa Navas’ Hoy partido a las tres. His colleagues have also stood out with Papu Curotto’s Esteros, Mariano Biasin’s Sublime, Manuel Abramovich’s Pornomelancolía, Carlos Castro’s Regreso a Coronel Vallejos, and Javier van de Couter’s Mia. We’ve been meaning to programme “The gaze of…” to Argentine cinema for a while, and now that the opportunity has arrived, we are happy to start by presenting Van de Couter’s latest work, a dazzling film: Tesis sobre una domesticación, based on the novel of the same name by Camila Sosa Villada and starring her. Of course, Berger’s new film, Los amantes astronautas, will also be on show. We also wanted to give Lucas Santa Ana a special spot with two of his films: 300 Cartas and Luces Azules. And, as the icing on the cake, director Mariana Wainstein will astound us with Linda, her explosive debut feature, a sort of Argentinian Casa en flames, where an attractive housemaid blows up the fragile balance of a wealthy, worldly Buenos Aires family.
