Round table: New Horizons and Challenges of Lesbian Cinema in Spain

The round table New Horizons and Challenges of Lesbian Cinema in Spain, will evoke the emergence of a new generation of directors capable of realistically conveying the real experiences of the younger lesbian community (from Alba Cros to Zaida Carmona, including Mònica Rovira, Ruth Caudeli, Sara Fantova, Irene Moray, Isa Luengo, Sofía Esteve, or Nora Haddad). This will serve as a reminder of how difficult it remains for women to make films, especially those with lesbian themes (recalling, for example, the years it took Arantxa Echevarría to do Carmen y Lola, or the difficulties of others trying to make a name for themselves in film, such as Marta Balletbó-Coll), despite the increasingly common presence of out lesbian actresses in our film scene (Susi Sánchez, Inma Cuesta, Anabel Alonso, Elena Anaya, Alba Flores or Anna Castillo, for example). New projects, such as the production companies Amor y Lujo, Vayolet Films, or Loba Loba, also seem to be changing things, towards a better representation of lesbian women in Spanish cinema. We will discuss this with the producers Carlotta Schiavon, film critic Violeta Kovacsics Grisolía, film director Sara Fantova, moderated by Mar Canet, director of La Casa del Cine.

Speakers:

Carlotta Schiavon

Producer and founder of Vayolet Films. She studied at ESCAC and UCLA. She has worked in the production department of numerous projects in Spain and the United States. After several years in Los Angeles, she founded the production company Vayolet Films in Barcelona. Her latest projects include Farrucas, winner of Best Short Film at the 14th Gaudí Awards, and Els Buits, winner of the Silver Biznaga for Best Documentary Short at the 27th Málaga Film Festival. She currently has several short films, feature films, and series projects in development. She serves on the board of directors of Dones Visuals and is co-coordinator of the Acció Producció program.
Violeta Kovacsics Grisolía

Vilanova i la Geltrú, 1981. Film critic, PhD in Communication, and teacher. She regularly writes for publications such as Caimán, Cuadernos de Cine, Cinemanía, and Diari de Tarragona. She teaches Film History at ESCAC and also teaches at Pompeu Fabra University and the Open University of Catalonia. She is responsible for publications for the Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia and was the first woman to chair the Catalan Association of Film Critics and Writers. She coordinated the book Very Funny Things. Nueva comedia americana. Very Funny Things. Nueva comedia americana .

Sara Fantova

Bilbao, 1993. In 2013, she began her university studies at ESCAC, specializing in film directing two years later. She graduated in 2018 with No me despertéis, a short film shot in Bilbao and based on a personal experience. It participated in the official section of Seminci and in Voices Shorts in Rotterdam, among other competitions. She is also one of the eleven co-directors of La filla d’algú, a collective feature film supervised by Sergi Pérez, which premiered and won awards in Malaga. In 2023, she directed three episodes of the series Esto no es Suecia. Developed within ESCAC’s Ópera prima program, Jone, a veces is her first feature film.

Mar Canet

A film culture entrepreneur, Mar Canet is the Director and founder of La Casa del Cine in Barcelona, a school of cinematographic theory and direction. Co-founder of the Americana Film Fest in Barcelona, Coordinator of the international wine film festival or Most Festival of Vilafranca del Penedès, Programmer of the LGTBI film festival or FIRE!! Mostra in Barcelona and Coordinator of the morning screenings for secondary schools by the D’A Barcelona Film Festival. She’s also CEO of The New Flesh production company (GOYA 2023 nominee for the short documentary Dancing with Rosa, candidate for Mira niño, 2024).

Flamenco Queer collective through photographs by Alexandre Bré. This collective brings together artists passionate about flamenco who express, in their own way, the multiple facets of their personal and social identity through a queer interpretation of this traditional art. The images captured by Alexandre Bré bear witness to the vitality and intensity of these artists, for whom every performance—dance, song, or guitar—becomes an act of affirmation. The exhibition explores how Queer Flamenco reinvents this cultural heritage, integrating contemporary themes while preserving its essence.

Alexandre Bré is a freelance photographer represented by Hans Lucas Studio. His work explores social, environmental, and fashion themes. His photographs have been published in numerous newspapers and magazines such as The Times, Paris Match, Libération, Le Monde, Elle, and El País. His immersive approach allows him to establish deep connections with his subjects, capturing the fragility and intensity of the gazes he photographs. Trained in film at prestigious Catalan institutions such as the CECC and ESCAC in Barcelona, ​​he has directed several short films, including Heroína (2015) and Transmission (2017), screened at the CCCB and selected by Yann Arthus-Bertrand’s Buen Planeta Foundation. He is currently working on his first feature-length documentary, Un air de bonheur, as well as an animated short titled Les Frères d’Armor.

On the occasion of the The gaze of Argentine Cinema section, we have partnered with the wonderful dance space Movimiento Factory, located in the heart of Gràcia, to offer you two wonderful Queer Tango workshops!

“Tango is not just music and movement; it is a dialogue between bodies where expression, sensations, and feelings are shared.” Ezequiel De Rosa

The workshop offers a safe space for learning tango, open to all, without restrictions based on gender, age, physicality, or identity. More than a dance, tango is a body language, a game of communication in which the dynamics between those who dance it are explored. In the QUEER TANGO workshop, we break with the traditional heteronormative codes of social dance and immerse ourselves in experimentation, playing with roles to discover new forms of connection and expression. Through the exploration of movement and the exchange of roles, both when leading and when being guided, the social constructions of gender are questioned, allowing roles to blur and reinvent themselves. This workshop invites you to delve into the world of tango, transforming dance step by step into a powerful tool for self-knowledge, empowerment, and personal freedom.

No previous experience is necessary! Open to everyone and all levels, and high heels are not required ;)

About the teacher, Ezequiel De Rosa

Ezequiel De Rosa is a dancer, performing artist and teacher originally from Rosario, Argentina. She began her studies at the age of 6 in classical, Spanish and folk dance. During his adolescence he delved into tango, Latin and urban rhythms, as well as Castilian and Leonese folklore, a discipline in which in recent years he worked as a coordinator and teacher. He is a teacher of physical education and jazz and contemporary dance. Currently, he is co-creator and performer of La Arrabalera, a circus-tango company. Committed to inclusivity and accessibility to dance for all, Ezequiel defends teaching based on the diversity of bodies, ages and trajectories. She believes in the transformative power of dance as a tool for expression, encounter and empowerment, promoting barrier-free learning that is open to all people, regardless of gender.

We commissioned our beloved film director Carlos Domeque to interview some of the people behind the festival: Jordi Samsó (president of Casal Lambda), Verónica Carracedo (aka Dosvisual -webmaster and graphic designer), Antoine Leonetti (festival director), and Berta Fernández (person in charge of the terrace and the soul of this essential meeting space!). You can view this work in the Multi-Purpose Hall of the French Institute during the festival, and on Youtube aswell.

Our beloved Armand de Fluvià, creator of Casal Lambda in 1976 and pioneer of LGBT rights in Spain, left us last year at the age of 92. We owe him so much, because he knew how to oppose the laws against “vagos y maleantes” to get LGBT people out of jail and create the first space for the collective in our country. We have prepared a video to pay tribute to him, which you view in the Multi-Purpose Hall of the French Institute during the festival, and on Youtube aswell.

Our great friend Juanma Carrillo was at the side of FIRE!! for many years to direct the most emotional spots and videos of the festival. Juanma left us last summer, after a long illness.
