Four close Croatian friends, all homosexuals, fought the Ustachis and the Nazis by joining Tito’s National Liberation Struggle. Sixteen years later, they have become renowned filmmakers, making films criticizing the society of their time while living their sexuality freely. Emir, a loyal Communist party member, is charged with sabotaging their careers and their lives… The B&W film, with its crude sex scenes and repression, navigates (like Emir) through a world of facades, frustrations and cowardice, sometimes imbued with a certain humanity, and resonates strangely with today’s polarised world. Selected as Croatia’s official submission for the 2025 Academy Award for Best International Feature, Beautiful Evening, Beautiful Day is a sweeping historical epic and a tribute to love, loyalty, and the power of art and friendship.
