Covered in fennel!*

I write these lines during the week when we discovered the barbarity of the Chechen concentration camp where gays are tortured and murdered while the Russian government looks the other way, permitting this savagery by omission. What is happening? What is happening to us?

In this post-truth age where lies and populism rule, LGBT people are becoming more and sympathetic towards the ideologies behind extreme right-wing policies. We are seeing this in France and in Holland, and I ask again: What is happening? What is happening to us?

The more advances we make in recognition of legal rights, the more we feel that if we leave our comfort zone we will encounter hard reality in the form of vile, terrifying acts and extreme levels of homophobia that lead us to think we have not really gained much. What can we do? There can be no doubt: we must rebel and fight back! No matter how many individuals, organised groups, political forces and governments want to send us back to the Middle Ages, when we were covered in fennel and burnt at the stake, we must mobilise and fight with all our strength. Everyone should do what they can: educating, taking part in protests, tweeting, whatever… aware, always, that unity is our best weapon.

We at Casal Lambda, as organisers of the FIRE!! Film Festival, know that we can and must fight through film too. Because the most effective tool is, without doubt, education and culture. And Casal Lambda is whole-hearted committed to education and culture. And because we are fucked, “covered in fennel” and tied to the stake by those who would deny us our right to exist. That is why the response must be the peaceful, democratic fight, a powerful, systematic, global and collective response that goes beyond the LGBT community, because our fight is also that of all those who want to be free.

Have a good FIRE!! Film Festival!

* A symbol left over from the courts of the Inquisition: covered in fennel and burnt at the stake. And then there is finocchio: a word meaning fennel, still used as an insult for gays in Italy.
